Sonam Wangchuk Calls Himself an ‘Honorary Cockroach’, Urges Government Not to Suppress Youth Expression

Environmentalist and educationist Sonam Wangchuk has expressed solidarity with the online Cockroach Janta Party movement, calling himself an honorary cockroach while urging the government to treat the satirical campaign as democratic feedback rather than a threat.

Why He Cannot Be a Full Member

Wangchuk said he does not qualify for official membership since the movement is centred around unemployed and frustrated youth, and he considers himself neither unemployed nor lazy. However, he said he identifies with the message the movement is putting forward and proudly claims the title of honorary cockroach.

Dissent Through Humour Is Legitimate

Drawing a comparison with political cartoonists, Wangchuk said satire and symbolic expression are legitimate democratic tools and the government should see the movement as creative feedback, not a challenge to be suppressed. He praised Indian youth for choosing digital creativity and humour over street protests with stones, calling it something befitting a Vishwaguru nation.

Warning Against Suppression

Wangchuk cautioned that shutting down social media accounts linked to the movement could deepen youth frustration and push dissent in dangerous directions, citing political unrest in Nepal as a cautionary example. He appealed to youth to continue raising their voice peacefully and urged the government not to push them toward confrontation.

CJP Website Taken Down

Meanwhile, CJP founder Abhijeet Dipke claimed on Saturday that the movement’s website was taken down and accused the central government of dictatorial behaviour. He said nearly 10 lakh people had signed up as members of the platform, and that six lakh had signed a petition demanding the resignation of Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan over the NEET paper leak.
