Kolkata: Strong tremors were felt across Kolkata and several parts of West Bengal on Friday morning after a 5.7-magnitude earthquake struck Bangladesh’s Narsingdi district. The quake, which occurred at 10:08 am at a depth of 10 km, sent residents rushing out of buildings, though no damage or injuries were immediately reported.

Residents Describe “Intense” Shaking

Many Kolkata residents took to social media to share their experiences, with several calling it one of the strongest tremors they had ever felt. Some said their buildings shook for nearly 30 seconds, while others described being jolted awake by the vibrations. People in several districts stepped outside their homes and workplaces as a precaution.

Tremors Felt Across Northeast; Bangladesh Epicentre Identified

According to the National Centre for Seismology, the epicentre was 13 km south-southwest of Narsingdi in Bangladesh, with tremors also felt in Dhaka. Reports of mild shaking came in from Tripura’s Dharmanagar, Meghalaya’s Tura and Cherrapunjee, and Mizoram’s Aizawl. Earlier in the day, a separate 5.2-magnitude earthquake struck Pakistan at a depth of 135 km.
