Washington, D.C.: Astronaut Sunita Williams and her crewmate Butch Wilmore have finally begun their return journey to Earth after spending over nine months stranded at the International Space Station (ISS).
According to NASA, the duo undocked from the ISS at 10:35 am IST on Tuesday aboard SpaceX’s Dragonspacecraft. They are set for a 17-hour return trip, with a scheduled splashdown off the coast of Florida at approximately 3:27 am IST on Wednesday.
A Delayed Return Due to Boeing’s Starliner Issues
Williams and Wilmore initially traveled to the ISS in June 2023 as part of a mission to test Boeing’s Starliner spacecraft on its first crewed flight. However, technical propulsion failures led to serious concerns, forcing the spacecraft to return empty, leaving the astronauts to extend their stay aboard the ISS.
This prolonged mission marks one of the longest unintended space stays due to technical setbacks in commercial crew transport missions.
NASA’s Plan for Safe Landing
NASA has assured that all safety protocols are in place for a smooth return, with SpaceX teams on standby for recovery operations. The Dragon capsule’s parachute-assisted landing will be carefully monitored, and medical teams will be ready to assist the astronauts upon arrival.
Homecoming Celebrations Await
Williams, an Indian-American astronaut, is a veteran space traveler and an inspiration for many in India and abroad. Her return is expected to be met with widespread celebrations, both in NASA circles and her ancestral home in Gujarat, India.
This historic mission also highlights the growing role of commercial space travel, despite Boeing’s Starliner setbacks.
