Mumbai, July 12: Sanjay Raut, the party’s leader, confirmed on Tuesday that there were discussions about Droupadi Murmu, the NDA’s presidential candidate, at the meeting that Shiv Sena leader Uddhav Thackeray had called for in Mumbai on July 11 to prepare for the presidential elections. He added that supporting Murmu does not imply supporting the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).
“We discussed Droupadi Murmu (NDA’s Presidential candidate) in our meeting yesterday. Supporting Droupadi Murmu does not mean supporting BJP. Shiv Sena’s role will be clear in a day or two; party chief Uddhav Thackeray will make a decision,” Shiv Sena leader Sanjay Raut said.
He also emphasised the party’s goodwill toward Yashwant Sinha, the opposition’s presidential candidate.
Gajanan Kirtikar, a party MP, stated earlier on Monday that 16 of the party’s 18 lawmakers were present at the meeting convened by the Shiv Sena leader and that Uddhav Thackeray would announce his choice in a day or two.
On July 18, presidential election will take place and on July 21, the results will be tallied. Yashwant Sinha is the nominee of the opposition parties, and Droupadi Murmu is the presidential candidate of the BJP-led NDA.
