New Delhi, Aug 18: Former Bihar Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) MP Prabhunath Singh has received a major setback from the Supreme Court. Reversing the decision of the Civil Court and the Patna High Court, the Supreme Court has convicted Prabhunath Singh in the 1995 double murder case. A three-judge bench headed by Justice Sanjay Kishan Kaul has asked Prabhunath to appear in the court on September 1. On this day the court can sentence Prabhunath Singh. Notably, Prabhunath Singh has been a three-time JDU MP from Maharajganj Lok Sabha seat of Bihar and once on RJD ticket.

In the 28-year-old double murder case, the lower court released Prabhunath Singh. After this, the Patna High Court also upheld the release. But the Supreme Court overturned the verdict of both the courts and convicted Prabhunath. The court said in its decision that there is enough evidence against Prabhunath Singh. At the same time, the Supreme Court upheld the release of the rest of the accused in the case.

The case of double murder is from 1995, 28 years ago. Rajendra Rai (47 years) and Daroga Rai (18 years) were murdered for not voting for the candidate supported by Prabhunath Singh during the election in Masrakh, Chhapra. After this, the brother of the deceased complained about threatening the witnesses. So the case was transferred from Chhapra to Patna where its trial took place. The court acquitted Prabhunath Singh due to lack of evidence. The decision of the lower court was challenged in the Patna High Court. After this, the High Court upheld the decision of the lower court in 2012. Then Harendra, the brother of the deceased Rajendra Rai, challenged the decision of both the courts in the Supreme Court. On which a hearing was held in the Supreme Court today. On having sufficient evidence against Prabhunath Singh, the court convicted him.

Currently, Prabhunath Singh is serving a sentence in Hazaribagh Jail in another murder case of 1995. Masrakh MLA Ashok Singh was murdered in 1995. Ashok Singh defeated Prabhunath Singh in the election. After losing the election, Prabhunath Singh threatened that he would kill Ashok Singh within three months. After this Ashok Singh was murdered. Prabhunath Singh was convicted in this case in 2017. In this case, he is still serving his sentence in jail.
