Ranchi: The Supreme Court could not take up Jharkhand Chief Minister Hemant Soren’s petition for hearing today, with no fresh date fixed yet for the next hearing in the matter.

Why the Hearing Was Deferred

The petition was listed before a bench of Justice Arvind Kumar and Justice Joymalya Bagchi. However, both judges were part of the Constitution Bench assembled to hear pending petitions related to the Sabarimala temple case, which meant Hemant Soren’s petition could not be taken up today.

What the Case Is About

Hemant Soren had approached the Supreme Court challenging a High Court order in a case related to the defiance of ED summons. The High Court had directed him to face trial in a complaint petition filed by the ED but had granted him exemption from personal appearance. Soren challenged this order in the Supreme Court.

Background of the ED Case

The ED had filed a complaint petition (3952/2024) before the PMLA court, alleging that Chief Minister Hemant Soren had defied summons issued by the agency, which constitutes a punishable offence, and sought judicial proceedings against him. The case is now known as MP/MLA Case 2/2024. After the competent court took cognisance of the matter and issued a notice to Soren, he had approached the High Court seeking quashing of the case, but the High Court declined to do so.
