Washington: Tensions between the United States and Iran have sharply escalated after President Donald Trump declared the ceasefire to be on life support and rejected Iran’s latest nuclear proposal, while the Pentagon announced the deployment of a nuclear-armed submarine near the Middle East.
Trump Rejects Iran’s Nuclear Proposal
Speaking at a White House event on Monday, Trump dismissed Iran’s new nuclear proposal, calling it a piece of garbage. He said Iran had earlier agreed to allow the removal of nuclear dust from enrichment facilities damaged in recent US military strikes, but later backed away from the commitment as Iranian officials did not want to put anything in writing. Trump made clear that his position remains firm — Iran must not be allowed to possess nuclear weapons.
Ceasefire Hanging by a Thread
Trump used stark language to describe the current state of the ceasefire, comparing it to a patient with only a one percent chance of survival. The breakdown in agreement over the enrichment facilities has severely strained any prospect of a diplomatic resolution in the near term.
US Deploys Nuclear Submarine, Iran Responds
The Pentagon announced the deployment of a nuclear-armed submarine near the Middle East in what is widely seen as a show of force. In response, Iran has also deployed light submarines in the Strait of Hormuz. Iranian Parliament Speaker Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf hit back on social media platform X, warning that Tehran is fully prepared and capable of responding to any attack, with all options remaining open and the armed forces ready to deliver a decisive response to any aggression.
