New Delhi: The Supreme Court on Friday issued notices to Kannada actor Darshan Thoogudeepa, actress Pavithra Gowda, and five others in connection with the Renukaswamy murder case. The court agreed to examine the Karnataka government’s plea challenging the bail granted by the Karnataka High Court.
State’s Challenge to Bail Order
A bench comprising Justices J B Pardiwala and R Mahadevan issued the notice after the state government expressed concerns that the bail order could set a precedent, enabling other co-accused to seek similar relief. The Supreme Court, while refraining from canceling the bail at this stage, directed lower courts to evaluate any fresh bail applications on their own merit without relying on the High Court’s order.
The Karnataka High Court had granted bail to Darshan and the others on December 13, 2024. The state government subsequently moved the Supreme Court on January 6, 2025, seeking a review of the order.
Background of the Case
Darshan was arrested on June 11, 2024, after being accused of orchestrating the murder of his fan, 33-year-old autorickshaw driver Renukaswamy, who was found dead on June 9, 2024. Allegedly, Darshan incited his fans to attack and kidnap Renukaswamy after the victim posted derogatory remarks about actress Pavithra Gowda on social media.
Controversy in Custody
While in custody at Parappana Agrahara Jail in Bengaluru, a photograph of Darshan relaxing with fellow inmates surfaced online, leading to his transfer to Ballari Central Jail. On October 30, 2024, Darshan was granted interim bail for medical reasons, followed by regular bail in December.
Supreme Court’s Observations
The Supreme Court emphasized that while the state has sought bail cancellation, staying the High Court’s order would indirectly amount to revoking bail, which the bench deemed inappropriate at this stage. However, the court assured that the interests of the prosecution would be safeguarded.
