Ranchi, Feb.9: The case related to the continuation of Neeraj Sinha as director-general police of Jharkhand after his due date of retirement on January 31 is likely to be heard in the Supreme Court.

It is being anticipated after Chief Justice N.V. Ramana and A.S.Bopanna, who is hearing a contempt petition related to the DGP appointment controversy of Jharkhand, accepted a plea to give an early date for hearing in the matter.

The situation came after Apoorva Khator, who is an advocate of petitioner Rajesh Kumar, informed the court regarding the implication of delay.

“The matter was listed on September 3 last year and it was ordered to be listed after two weeks. It was never listed. It pertains to the top post of Director General of Police (DGP) of Jharkhand,” Khator pleaded.

On which the bench said the courts are hearing “restricted matters” due to COVID and will consider the petition for early hearing. Later the court also observed that: “It is not a priority thing. We know that we are hearing banned cases. We shall see it.”

The development took place after a petition seeking urgent hearing of a pending contempt petition was filed against the state government and the DGP informing the court that Sinha was holding the post of top cop even after his retirement on January 31.

The issue of the appointment of DGP is in controversy for a long time in Jharkhand after K.N.Choubey went on central deputation and M V Rao was appointed DGP without UPSC clearance and then he was replaced by Sinha again without clearance from the UPSC.
