Jamshedpur, Oct 18: Following intelligence input that a number of Afghans are coming to the steel city from Afghanistan via Qatar and Dubai, the police are contemplating to start a survey of all Afghans staying in the city.

The police prompted to carry out the survey of Afghans here in the steel city to detect whether any of such foreign nationals are sneaking into the city by resorting to illegal means.

Presently, there are about 50 Afghans staying in the city, mostly at Dhatkidih in Bistupur and Golmuri areas. Most of these foreign nationals use to carry on money-lending business here by staying at rented houses.

According to a highly-placed source in the police, five Afghans are likely to come to Jamshedpur by air through Qatar or Dubai while the flight service between India and Afghanistan is yet to resume after the Taliban regime was established in that country.

“The main objective behind the survey of the Afghan nationals here in the city is to find out whether they are coming to India and ultimately to the steel city on valid documents. Because if those doing business of money-lending can come here by boarding flights from Qatar and Dubai by means of illegal documents, any militant can also come to our country in same way,” said a police official requesting anonymity.

The official said for the detection of the unauthorised entry of the Afghans can be made only when they would carry out the survey by counting each and every afghan staying here.

He pointed out such surveys will have to be carried out regularly for some time so that any new face can be scrutinized by the police and other security agencies, including ATS.

During the survey,  details of the Afghans staying here would be taken into account, including the details of the house owners where such foreign nationals are staying.
