Jamshedpur, Oct 18: Suspended Seraikela Thana OC, Manohar Kumar on Wednesday surrendered in the court of chief judicial magistrate, Seraikela in connection with a case of custodial death of a minor.

After the surrender by the police officer, he was taken into custody and forwarded to Seraikela divisional jail immediately, but he was shifted to MGM Medical College Hospital as he had fallen sick.

At the medical college hospital, the arrested police officer is undergoing treatment under judicial custody.

Manohar Kumar was suspended by the former Seraikela SP, Anand Prakash after a minor had committed suicide in the Thana lock-up on October 31 last year. The SP had suspended the Seraikela OC and subsequently instructed to register a murder case against him following a complaint lodged by the family members of the deceased boy.

It may be mentioned here that the minor had allegedly abducted a minor girl from Gahira village in Seraikela, leading the parents of the girl to lodge an FIR with the Seraikela Thana against the boy identified as Mohan Murmu on October 26.  Eventually, the girl’s parents and relatives turned up at the Thana taking the accused boy and the girl, having recovered the two from somewhere. The police, however, allowed the parents to take the girl back home and took the boy into custody.

But the police kept the boy in the Thana lock-up for about four days in the name of investigation, causing the boy to get desperate. On October 31, the boy was found hanging from a rod inside the lock-up. He had allegedly committed suicide by using the leather belt he had put on.
