New Delhi, March 24: Indian shuttlers PV Sindhu, HS Prannoy, and Kidambi Srikkanth were eliminated from the Swiss Open 2023 on Thursday.
India’s singles challenge at the Swiss Open is over as Mithun Manjunath withdrew from the contest in the second round.
As her dismal streak in 2023 continued, Sindhu was defeated by Indonesia’s Putri Kusuma Wardani in three games with scores of 15-21, 21-12, and 18-21.
The 20-year-old Wardani controlled the match’s opening game against the Commonwealth Games champion. Similar to the first game, Sindhu trailed 6-7 at one point in the second one. But, the Indian star came back to take an 11-10 lead into halftime.
Following the break, Sindhu totally outperformed her opponent, outscored her, and won the game 21-12 to advance the match to the decisive game.
The third game was completely under Wardani’s control, as she quickly built an 11-5 advantage at the half. Again displaying her tenacity, Sindhu entered the game again, making 12–16 shots at one time. Wardani, however, proved to be too powerful that day and took both the game and the match.
Prannoy had a terrible day on Thursday as he was soundly thrashed by Christo Popov in two games by scores of 8-21, 8-21. The Indian ace, 30, was one of the front-runners before the match. Yet on Wednesday, when he was brutally thrashed by Popov, he appeared to be a pale shell of the man he once was.
Although putting up a valiant battle against Hong Kong’s Cheuk Yiu Lee, Srikanth was forced to accept the day’s defeat. The Indian ace lost his second-round encounter 22-20, 21-17.
After losing to Chia Hao Lee of Chinese Taipei in straight games in the second round of the Swiss Open, Manjunath retired. Lee advanced to the following round by defeating the Indian shuttler 21-19, 21-10.
Satwik and Chirag, representing India, won their match against Chinese Taipei’s Fang-Chih Lee and Fang-Jen Lee by scores of 12-21, 21-17, and 28-26 to advance to the men’s doubles quarterfinals.
