Tamil Nadu: Red alert in 13 districts as IMD predicts heavy rain on Dec 8

The IMD has predicted heavy rain in Tamil Nadu on December 8, six NDRF teams deployed

New Delhi, Dec 6: A low-pressure depression that is forming over the Southeast Bay of Bengal has led to heavy rainfall being predicted by the Indian Meteorological Department for 13 districts of Tamil Nadu on December 8.

Later on, the depression can move and intensify in a west-northwest path. Strong gusts will also accompany the period’s severe rainfall, according to the IMD.

Villupuram, Chengalpattu, Cuddalore, Kanchipuram, Thiruvallur, Ariyalur, Perambalur, Chennai, Kallakurichi, Mayiladuthurai, Thanjavur, Thiruvarur, and Nagapattinam are among the Tamil Nadu districts that have received red alerts.

“Well Marked Low pressure area (WML) over the southeast Bay of Bengal on December 6. To concentrate into a depression over the southeast Bay of Bengal by December 6 evening. To intensify further gradually into a cyclonic storm (CS) and reach near north Tamil Nadu-Puducherry and Andhra Pradesh coasts by December 8 morning,” the weather office said in a tweet.

Rainfall is forecast for three locations, Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, and the Karaikal area on December 7. Thunderstorms and lightning will also accompany the rain, the IMD stated in a release.

On December 8, many areas are expected to experience light to moderate rain, and Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, and the Karaikal regions are likely to experience sporadic thunderstorms and lightning.

Aside from this, isolated areas of Tamil Nadu’s Villupuram, Cuddalore, Mayiladuthurai, Thanjavur, Tiruvarur, Nagapattinam, and Pudukkottai districts as well as Puducherry and Karaikal are likely to experience heavy to very heavy rain.

Prior to December 8, six teams of the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) have been stationed in Tamil Nadu. In Nagapattinam, Thanjavur, Thiruvarur, Cuddalore, Mayiladuthurai, and Chennai, the NDRF teams have been stationed, according to ANI.
