Three elephants on rampage in Hazaribag; damage crops, houses

Hazaribag, Aug 9: Three elephants have unleashed a reign of terror in the Tatjharia block of the district damaging standing crops and houses for the last few days. Farmers are suffering huge losses and are chasing away the elephants every morning but they come back again in the night going on a rampaging spree due to which an atmosphere of panic has arisen among the villagers.

A similar incident happened in Kolhu village last night where the three elephants entered and damaged the boundary wall destroying the crops of maize and paddy on several acres of land.

Santosh Mandal, a resident of Kolhu, said that the three elephants came out from the Churchu forest and destroyed the maize crop in the fields of Shakuntala Devi and Binod Prasad. After this, elephants entered into the fields of Chetlal Prasad, Shankar Prasad, Prakash Mandal, Pankaj Mandal, Binod Mandal, Lattu Mahato, Narayan Sahu, Badri Singh, Mohan Mahato, Suraj Mandal by demolishing the boundary wall and destroyed paddy and ready crops of maize. The farmers of the area have appealed to the forest department and administrative officials to drive away the elephants.

Forest department officials said they are keeping an eye on trio elephants and will chase them away from here soon. But villagers said every year the elephants roam around in this area creating panic among villagers. Many villagers have also lost their lives due to elephants in the last few years.
