New Delhi, August 8: Derek O’Brien, a leader of the TMC, was suspended from the Rajya Sabha on Tuesday for the remainder of the Monsoon session after he disobeyed Chairman Jagdeep Dhankar while attempting to get the Manipur issue discussed.
The TMC leader attempted to speak under the guise of raising a point of order, and when the chairman asked him to identify the rule he wanted to address, O’Brien cited rule 267, which the opposition has been utilizing since the start of the Monsoon session on July 20 to request a discussion on the Manipur issue.
This made the chairman furious, who said he is naming O’Brien.
Later, the TMC leader was suspended for the remainder of the Monsoon session by a motion made by the House leader and Union Minister Piyush Goyal.
As soon as Goyal stood up, TMC MPs rushed to the well and started yelling slogans.
O’Brien has been suspended for the rest of the Monsoon session, Dhankhar said.
Parliament’s Monsoon session will come to a close on August 11.
An MP named by the chair must leave the House’s proceedings for the day, as required by the rules.
Even during a discussion on the Delhi services bill, the chair and O’Brien got into a dispute on Monday evening. Dhankhar accused O’Brien of using “theatrics” to grab attention in the House during that heated argument.
The session was then adjourned till noon by the chair.
