Tokyo, July 15: Tokyo will host the 2025 World Athletics Championships once again, the sport’s international governing body announced on Thursday.

Tokyo won the right to host the championships for a second time over Kenya, Poland, and Singapore, according to the World Athletics Council. This means that, four years after the Olympic Games were held in an empty stadium because of the pandemic, Tokyo’s Olympic Stadium will have the opportunity to host a significant athletics event.

“Within an extremely strong field of candidates to host the World Athletics Championships 2025, Tokyo offered a compelling bid,” World Athletics president Sebastian Coe said.

The last time the World Championships were held in Tokyo was in 1991. That competition is best remembered for American long-jumper Mike Powell’s 8.95-meter (29-foot-4.4-inch) world record-breaking leap, which broke Bob Beamon’s illustrious 1968 mark.

“History has shown that we have the ability and energy to host the world’s top athletes and to inspire international audiences,” JAAF President Mitsugi Ogata said.

This year’s World Championships, which begin on Friday at Eugene’s Hayward Field in Oregon, were announced while the choice was being made.
