Guwahati: In a significant step towards lasting peace in Tripura, two insurgent groups have agreed to lay down their arms and join the mainstream, following a historic peace agreement signed with the central and state governments. This landmark agreement effectively ends decades of insurgency in Tripura, leaving the state with no active rebel groups.

“Today is a historic day for us. The struggle that we saw for the last 35 years has come to an end. I am glad these groups have put down weapons and are walking on the path to peace,” said Union Home Minister Amit Shah during the announcement.

The Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) has been actively working to realize Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision of a developed and peaceful northeast, free from extremism and conflict. The two groups involved in this latest peace agreement are the National Liberation Front of Tripura (NLFT) and the All Tripura Tiger Force (ATTF).

Shah highlighted that 328 members of these groups will now be reintegrated into society as part of the peace process. “We have invested ₹2,500 crore for the development of this region. We are not only signing peace agreements but also implementing them on the ground,” he emphasized.

Under PM Modi’s leadership, the government has signed 12 significant agreements aimed at fostering peace and prosperity in the northeastern region, with three of these agreements specifically related to Tripura. Shah noted that due to these efforts, around 10,000 individuals have given up arms and joined the mainstream.

Pradyot Manikya Debburman, founder of the Tipra Motha Party and now an ally of the BJP government in Tripura, also played a crucial role in facilitating this peace-building process.

Tripura Chief Minister Manik Saha, along with senior officials from the Ministry of Home Affairs and the state government, were present at the signing of the peace agreement, underscoring the importance of this milestone for the region’s future.
