Trump asks Meta to restore Facebook account as he gears up for 2024 run

Washington, Jan 19: Former US President Donald Trump is urging Meta to reactivate his Facebook account two years after it was deactivated, as he hopes to return to power in 2024.

Trump was banned from the social media platform two years ago when a mob of his supporters tried to halt the certification of his election defeat to Joe Biden by storming the US Capitol in Washington.

In a letter to Meta, Donald Trump’s advisers argued that the ban had dramatically distorted and inhibited public discourse and should be restored.

He also asked for a meeting to discuss Trump’s immediate return to the platform, where he had 34 million followers, arguing that his status as the leading contender for the Republican nomination in 2024 justified ending the ban.

Meta has set up an internal working group to decide on the matter, and a decision is expected in the coming weeks as Trump seeks to gain some momentum in his re-election bid.

Notably, Donald Trump was also banned from Twitter for using the platform to encourage his supporters to gather near the Capitol. Twitter’s new owner Elon Musk reactivated Trump’s account last November, but Trump hasn’t tweeted anything since his return.

Donald Trump used Twitter and Facebook extensively when he ran for the presidency in 2016 and throughout his tenure.
