Washington: Former US President Donald Trump has issued a blunt warning to Apple, stating that the company must pay the price if it chooses to manufacture in India. Trump made it clear that Apple is welcome to build factories abroad, but it cannot expect to sell products in the US without paying tariffs.

The remarks came during a session in the Oval Office where Trump was signing executive orders aimed at boosting America’s nuclear energy sector. He revealed that Apple CEO Tim Cook had informed him of plans to expand production in India. “Tim said they’re going to start manufacturing in India. I said, that’s fine—go to India. But don’t expect to sell those products in America without paying a tariff. That’s the real policy,” Trump stated.

Push for America-first manufacturing

Trump has consistently advocated for bringing manufacturing back to the United States. He has repeatedly cautioned American companies that they will enjoy unrestricted access to the US market only if they prioritize domestic production.

This latest message reiterates his protectionist stance, highlighting that any profits made through offshore production will not be exempt from import duties. “If you’re going to benefit from lower costs overseas, you’ll pay your share at home,” Trump affirmed.

The former president’s firm policy signals a potential shift for global tech giants that increasingly rely on countries like India for production, while seeking to maintain tariff-free access to American consumers.
