New Delhi, Nov 14: An explosion on Sunday in Istanbul, Turkey, left at least six people dead and 81 more hurt. The explosion occurred on a busy pedestrian street in the Taksim neighbourhood of central Istanbul, injuring numerous persons. Suleyman Soylu, Turkey’s interior minister, reported that authorities had detained a suspect.

According to the Associated Press, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan described the explosion as a “treacherous attack” and promised to hold anyone responsible accountable.

He did not identify the perpetrators, but rather claimed that the attack had a “smell of terror,” without going into further detail or saying that it was still uncertain. According to the news agency, the president stated that the police and governor’s office were still conducting investigations and analysing video from the scene.

According to Erdogan, six people died. Later, Vice President Fuat Oktay announced that there were 81 injured, of whom two were in critical condition, and that it appeared to be a “terrorist attack.”

Following the explosion on Istanbul’s Istiklal Street, videos in the state media showed police and ambulances arriving at the scene.

Meanwhile, Arindam Bagchi, Ministry of External Affairs spokesperson, condoled the loss of lives in Istanbul in Sunday’s attack.

“India conveys its deepest condolences to the Government and people of Turkey on the tragic loss of lives in the blast that took place in Istanbul today. Our sympathies are also with those who sustained injuries. We wish them a speedy recovery,” the MEA spokesperson tweeted.
