Jamshedpur, July 31: Following a tip-off, the police on Sunday night arrested two armed men for allegedly killing gangster Amarnath Singh near Basukinath temple in Dumka district on July 27.
Those arrested were identified as Deepak Chowdhury alias Teka (38) and Abhishek Singh alias Bittu, both residents of Mango and Bagbera localities of the city respectively.
While arresting the two, the police recovered a pistol and six rounds of live cartridges from their possession.
Revealing about the breakthrough, SP (City) K Vijay Shankar said that both Teka and Bittu were caught while they were aboard a Calcutta-bound bus along with other passengers.
“After the city-based gangster Amarnath Singh was murdered in Dumka district, we had set up a special team to detect the killers. In the sequel to our effort to find out the assailants, we got a tip-off that some of the suspects are likely to flee the city by boarding a Bus to Calcutta. Accordingly, we instructed the MGM thana OC to set up a checking point at Deoghar village along NH-33. Incidentally, both the assailants were caught from a bus belonging to Sai Travels,” said Vijay Shankar while talking to the media this afternoon.
According to police, both Teka and Bittu have a criminal background and they have confessed to having shot dead Amarnath Singh by chasing the deceased throughout the route.
The police sent the arrested persons to jail after producing them before a judicial magistrate.
A resident of Gaur Bustee in Mango, Amarnath Singh (40) was gunned down by two camouflaged armed men near Basukinath temple in Dumka late in the night of July 27.
The police are likely to take the arrested persons in police remand so as to find out the reason behind the murder.
