Mumbai: After Karnataka, Gujarat, West Bengal, and Tamil Nadu, Maharashtra has reported two cases of the Human Metapneumovirus (HMPV). A 13-year-old girl and a 7-year-old boy from Nagpur have tested positive, raising India’s total number of cases to eight. Earlier, Karnataka reported two cases, Gujarat one, West Bengal one, and Tamil Nadu two.
Patients Showed Cold, Cough, and Fever Symptoms
The two children in Nagpur showed symptoms of cold, cough, and fever. Following medical tests, their reports came back positive. In response, the Mumbai Municipal Corporation has issued an alert, designating JJ and St. George Hospitals as primary centers for treating HMPV patients. Citizens have also been advised to follow precautionary measures.
Symptoms of HMPV
Common symptoms include:
• Cough
• Fever
• Nasal congestion
• Lung infections
• Wheezing
• Difficulty in breathing
The virus spreads through close personal contact, coughing, sneezing, and touching contaminated surfaces.
Precautionary Measures
• Wash hands frequently with soap and water.
• Avoid touching eyes, nose, or mouth with unclean hands.
• Maintain distance from sick individuals.
What Is HMPV?
HMPV has been present for several decades and was first identified in 2001 in the Netherlands in children with respiratory illnesses. It belongs to the Paramyxoviridae family and is airborne throughout the year, with increased spread during winter.

China is currently facing a major outbreak, with hospitals overwhelmed due to a surge in cases, especially among children and the elderly. Several provinces have declared emergencies to address the crisis.
