Jamshedpur, Oct 20: Police on Wednesday arrested two youths for committing chain-snatching under Sidhgora thana area of the city on October 14 afternoon.
Those arrested were identified as Rohit Karmakar (25) and Saurabh Baugh (26), both residents of Birsanagar.
Police have recovered the gold chain that the two criminals had snatched from the neck of a scooty-borne woman. A motorcycle and a cellphone that the two had used while committing the crime have also been seized.
Revealing about the breakthrough, deputy superintendent of police (Headquarters-I) Birendra Ram said that a middle-aged woman, Veena Kumari was riding back home from Birsanagar on October 14 afternoon.
“As the woman was negotiating Baridih-Birsanagar road, two bike-borne miscreants came from behind and had snatched away the gold chain near Indu Chauhan Nursing Home, leading the victim to make an abortive bid to chase the criminals. Later, the victim who is a resident of Sakchi had lodged an FIR in connection to the incident, ” said Ram while talking to the newsmen.
The DSP said despite there being no CCTV footage available of the crime scene, a police team led by Sidhgora thana OC, Ranjit Kumar detected the case.
The senior police officer said the criminals had kept the gold chain weighing 15 grams mortgage with one of their acquainted person at Rs 16,000.
According to the DSP, both Rohit and Saurabh are history-sheeters and were earlier sent to jail for chain and mobile phone snatching in Bistupur and Sakchi localities of the city.
Both the arrested persons were sent to Ghaghidih central jail after their production before a judicial magistrate in the evening.
