Jamshedpur, June 24: Mohammed Waheed and Fahim Khan who were arrested from their houses in Jugsalai had cheated at least three businessmen in Haryana by luring the victims into buying fake gold bonds.

The duo who would run the racket having changed their real identities had duped the businessmen crores of rupees in Gurgaon before fleeing back to Jamshedpur.

A Haryana police team which is in the steel city since Thursday late night and nabbed Waheed and Fahim with the local police on Friday morning is in the process of taking the two arrested persons back to Haryana on transit remand on Saturday.

Jugsalai thana OC, Kunal Kumar who worked jointly with the Haryana police team in arresting the cons said the two succeeded to swindle crores of rupees from the Haryana-based businessmen by winning the latter’s trust.

“Having realised the inherent element of greed even among rich people, Waheed and Fahim had tricked the businessmen into buying gold bonds at one-third rate of the original rate. For making the victims believe the fraudsters to be genuine persons, Waheed had impersonated as a ‘Sheth’ whereas Fahim personified himself as gold bonds seller in front of the victims so that the latter may fall into the trap easily. After the transaction would get through both the fraudsters would make themselves underground, ” Kumar said about the modus operandi of the two accused while talking to lagatar24.com.

The Jugsalai OC said Waheed and Fahim are not the only two to indulge in the money swindling racket, but there is a well-nit network having its link with scamsters’ hub in Jamtara.

“On the basis of the information divulged by the two arrested persons, the Haryana police are trying to trace out other criminals indulged in the racket,” the police officer said.

During the investigation, it was unravelled that Waheed who had a humble background till 2021 has bought two houses in Jugsalai and a huge plot of agricultural land at Sini in adjoining Seraikela-Kharsawan district.

Similarly, Fahim Khan too has bought landed properties and a brand new car worth Rs 22 lakhs during the past few months.

It may be mentioned here that Haryana police had on Friday seized a huge quantity of cash and gold jewellery from the houses of both Waheed and Fahim by carrying out raids there following mobile phone tracking.
