London: British Prime Minister Keir Starmer has stated that the United Kingdom will not participate in the ongoing Iran conflict. However, he announced that the UK will host a global summit involving around 35 countries to discuss reopening the Strait of Hormuz, a key route for global oil trade.
Global Summit on Hormuz Crisis
Starmer said the upcoming meeting will focus on ensuring safe and uninterrupted maritime movement through the Strait of Hormuz. He emphasized that the crisis has far-reaching implications for global economies and security. According to the United Nations Development Programme, the conflict could severely impact multiple economies beyond the immediate region.
Differences with US and Strategic Positioning
The UK Prime Minister’s stance signals a divergence from the approach of Donald Trump, who has been pushing for stronger military involvement from allies. Starmer stressed that his decisions would be guided solely by the interests of British citizens, despite mounting international pressure and heightened tensions.
NATO Tensions and US Frustration
Amid the crisis, Trump has reportedly expressed dissatisfaction with NATO members for refusing to deploy warships to secure the Strait of Hormuz. He criticized the alliance’s response and even indicated he is considering distancing the US from NATO. Meanwhile, geopolitical alignments are shifting, with Russia seen backing Iran in the ongoing conflict.
