New Delhi, Nov 8: The Delhi Patiala House Court on Monday gave its verdict in the Uphaar Cinema fire case in Delhi. The Court has awarded seven-year simple imprisonment to the convicts Sushil Ansal and Gopal Ansal and two others in a case of tampering with evidence in the 1997 Uphaar cinema fire tragedy case.

“I think it is very hard to reach out to this decision given the complexities involved. After some thinking over some nights and nights, I have come to this conclusion that they deserve punishment. They will serve 7 years of jail time and Rs 2.25 crore fine each on the Ansals,” the magistrate said.
Notably, On June 13, 1997, a fire broke out at Uphaar Talkies located in Green Park, Delhi. In this incident, 59 people died and more than 100 people were injured. The film ‘Border’ was being shown in talkies that day. The transformer of the theater caught fire, which later spread to other parts as well.
