WASHINGTON: The U.S. State Department has given the green light for a $175 million military sale to India, consisting of MK 54 MOD 0 Lightweight Torpedoes, as part of a broader defense package also including Italy and Romania. The approval is seen as a major step in strengthening defense ties between the two nations, especially in the Indo-Pacific region.
According to the Pentagon, the sale is part of a combined total of $965 million in military deals approved for the three nations. The other sales include sentinel radar systems to Romania for $110 million and an electronic attack mission system to Italy valued at $680 million.
Details of the Sale
The MK 54 MOD 0 Lightweight Torpedoes are critical anti-submarine warfare weapons designed for deployment from surface ships and helicopters. Known for their precision and agility, these torpedoes will enhance India’s maritime defense capabilities.
The principal contractor for this sale will be RTX Corporation.
Broader Defense Deals
In addition to the sale to India, the Pentagon has also approved:
- Romania: Sentinel radar systems valued at $110 million. The systems will provide Romania with improved defense capabilities, especially in surveillance and missile detection.
- Italy: An electronic attack mission system worth $680 million, with BAE Systems as the principal contractor.
