Washington DC: The United States government has entered its first shutdown since 2019 after Congress failed to approve a stopgap spending deal before the midnight deadline. At the centre of the deadlock is a clash between President Donald Trump and Democrats over healthcare funding, forcing around 750,000 federal employees into furloughs and disrupting a wide range of services. Unlike past shutdowns, the Trump administration appears ready for an extended standoff and has even warned of turning temporary job losses into permanent cuts.
Why This Shutdown Is More Serious
Traditionally, shutdowns ended with federal workers returning to their jobs, but this time the Trump administration has instructed agencies to prepare permanent “reduction-in-force” notices. The newly formed Department of Government Efficiency has already driven deep cuts, with officials signalling the shutdown as a chance to further shrink the federal workforce. Labour unions condemned the move, with AFL-CIO president Liz Shuler accusing Trump of treating workers as “pawns.” Democrats, too, pushed back, saying they would not bow to threats of mass firings.
What’s Closed And What’s Not
While essential services such as border protection, air traffic control, and emergency medical care continue, non-essential departments face furloughs. Student loan processing, food inspections, and national park operations are curtailed. Research institutions like the National Institutes of Health will suspend new clinical trials, while the FDA has warned of delays in drug approvals, raising concerns for innovation and patient care.
Impact On US Economy
Economists estimate each week of shutdown could shave 0.1 to 0.2 percentage points off US economic growth, with daily losses of about $400 million from unpaid federal employees. Markets have stayed relatively stable, but delays in key federal data releases add to uncertainty. Trump has hinted at using the shutdown to cut Democratic-backed programmes and remove federal workers he sees as opponents, raising concerns about long-term damage to public trust.
What Led To The Shutdown
The crisis stems from Trump’s refusal to extend Affordable Care Act subsidies and his push to reverse Medicaid cuts made earlier this year. Democrats have insisted on protecting healthcare funding, while Republicans accused them of “holding the government hostage.” With no compromise in sight, Washington braces for a prolonged shutdown that pits Trump’s government-shrinking agenda against Democrats’ fight for healthcare protections.
