Washington DC: The United States is reportedly preparing for possible military action against Iran by the end of this week, although President Donald Trump has not yet taken a final decision, according to CNN and CBS News reports.

Tensions Rise After Geneva Nuclear Talks

The US and Iran have been engaged in ongoing negotiations over a new nuclear agreement. Recently, delegations from both sides held an important meeting in Geneva, Switzerland. White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt said some progress was made during the talks, but major differences remain on key issues. Iran is expected to provide a detailed response to the US proposal in the coming weeks. Leavitt stated that Trump’s first preference is diplomacy, not military action, and warned that it would be wiser for Iran to reach an agreement with Washington.

Military Readiness and Trump’s Pending Decision

CBS News reported that Trump has been briefed by national security advisers that the US military could be ready for a potential strike by Saturday. However, the final approval for any attack still rests solely with the President. Reports also suggest that the Pentagon is temporarily moving some personnel out of the Middle East to reduce risk in case of retaliation. US forces have reportedly been active in the region for weeks, making strategic preparations.

Threats Over US Aircraft Carriers Add Pressure

Tensions have reportedly escalated further after claims that Iran’s Supreme Leader issued threats targeting US aircraft carriers. This development has drawn global attention, with the world closely watching Washington and Tehran.

Mass Protests Continue Inside Iran

Meanwhile, large-scale protests have been ongoing in Iran since December 28, driven by worsening economic conditions, rising inflation, and the falling value of the Iranian rial. The protests began in Tehran, where shopkeepers and traders shut down businesses, and later spread to several other cities, with anti-government slogans reported in multiple locations.

Iran Shuts Internet, US Imposes Visa Restrictions

As the situation worsened, Iran reportedly shut down internet and phone services nationwide on January 8, 2026, and deployed security forces. International leaders criticised the move as an attempt to suppress information. The US expressed support for peaceful protests and imposed visa restrictions on certain Iranian officials. Iranian authorities, however, dismissed the allegations, calling them foreign interference and blaming the US, Israel, and European nations for fuelling instability.
