US President Trump Threatens New Tariffs On Indian Rice Imports Amid Ongoing Trade Standoff

New Delhi: US President Donald Trump has once again warned India of new tariffs, signalling that he may impose duties on Indian rice and fertiliser imports due to stalled trade negotiations with both India and Canada.

Trump Targets Alleged ‘Dumping’ Of Indian Rice In US Market

During a meeting at the White House, where he announced a USD 12 billion support package for American farmers, Trump claimed that rising imports are hurting domestic agriculture. He pointed out that cheap rice from India, Thailand and Vietnam is allegedly causing a price crash in the US market. “They should not be dumping. It’s wrong,” he said, adding that preventing such imports would be a priority for his administration.

Possible Tariffs On Canadian Fertiliser As Trade Talks Freeze

Trump also hinted at heavy tariffs on fertilisers imported from Canada, arguing that excessive imports weaken local production. He warned of strong measures if required to protect American industry, stressing the need to safeguard farmers — a key voter base amid economic pressures, inflation and rising production costs.

Stalled Trade Negotiations And Rising Economic Tensions

Trade discussions between the US, India and Canada have shown no major progress so far. Earlier this year, the US imposed up to 50% tariffs on certain Indian goods. A US delegation is expected to visit India this week, but officials do not anticipate significant breakthroughs. Trump has previously warned Canada of tariff hikes under and outside the North American trade agreement, and the latest remarks indicate that revisions to the pact may also be on the table.
