New Delhi: The United States is pushing India to eliminate tariffs on imported cars under a proposed trade agreement, but India remains hesitant to immediately remove these duties, though it is open to gradual reductions, according to a Reuters report.

US Presses for Lower Tariffs to Benefit Tesla & Other Automakers

• The US demand for lower auto tariffs aims to benefit American carmakers, including Tesla, which is gearing up to enter the Indian market.

• India currently imposes import duties of up to 110% on foreign vehicles, one of the highest in the world.

• Tesla CEO Elon Musk has previously criticized these tariffs, stating they hinder market entry.

• Tesla had put its India plans on hold last year due to high import taxes but has revived its efforts to set up operations.

Trump Warns of Reciprocal Action Over High Tariffs

US President Donald Trump has backed Musk’s demand, criticizing India’s high import taxes on cars during a Congress address on Tuesday. He warned of possible reciprocal trade measures if India does not lower these tariffs.

“The US ask is for India to bring tariffs down to zero or negligible in most sectors, except agriculture,” a source stated. India, however, is weighing its options and will respond after consulting domestic automakers.

India’s Cautious Approach & Domestic Automakers’ Concerns

• The Indian government has been preparing the local auto industry for possible tariff reductions, though it remains protective of domestic manufacturers.

• Major Indian automakers like Tata Motors and Mahindra & Mahindra are opposed to tariff cuts, fearing foreign EV imports could affect local investments in the electric vehicle industry.

• India’s automotive industry, producing 4 million vehicles annually, is one of the most protected globally.

Trade Target: $500 Billion by 2030

• During a recent meeting between Trump and PM Narendra Modi, both countries set a goal to boost bilateral trade to $500 billion by 2030.

• India’s Union Trade Minister Piyush Goyal is currently in the US, meeting top officials, including US Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick, to discuss trade policies.

• A final trade deal is expected by Fall 2025 as both sides work to resolve tariff disputes.

With Tesla’s entry in focus, India’s stance on import duties will play a crucial role in shaping the future of the auto industry and US-India trade relations.
