Prayagraj: In a landmark move ahead of the Maha Kumbh Mela 2025, the Uttar Pradesh government, led by Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, has declared the Maha Kumbh area in Prayagraj as a separate district. This decision, taken on Sunday, aims to ensure efficient management and seamless administration during the grand religious gathering scheduled from January 13 to February 26, 2025.
Formation of Maha Kumbh Mela District
The newly formed district, officially named “Maha Kumbh Mela District,” includes revenue villages and the entire parade area specified in the official notification. Ravindra Kumar Mandad, District Magistrate of Prayagraj, issued the notification under the Uttar Pradesh Prayagraj Mela Authority Act, 2017, granting the district unique administrative and executive powers.
Administrative Details
•The Mela Adhikari (Kumbh Mela) will hold the powers of District Magistrate, Executive Magistrate, and Additional District Magistrate.
•The Mela Adhikari will also exercise all the powers of a Collector under the Uttar Pradesh Revenue Code, 2006, as amended by the Uttar Pradesh Revenue Code (Amendment) Act, 2016.
•The notification ensures that the new district’s administrative setup comes into immediate effect.
Significance of the Decision
The creation of Maha Kumbh Mela District is aimed at smoothening the operations of the Maha Kumbh, which is anticipated to attract millions of pilgrims and tourists. The decision aligns with the vision expressed by Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath during the Magh Mela 2024.
Prime Minister Modi is scheduled to visit Uttar Pradesh on December 13 to review preparations for the Maha Kumbh 2025 and inaugurate key development projects.

Held once every 12 years, the Maha Kumbh is considered the largest religious congregation globally. The 2025 event will commence on January 13 and conclude on February 26.
