New Delhi, Dec 30: India’s Marion Biotech has halted production of the cough syrup and all medicines after Uzbekistan on Wednesday claimed that at least 18 children in the country have died after taking an India cough syrup.
The Uttar Pradesh Drug Control and the Central Drugs Standards Control Organization (CDSCO) have asked Noida-based company Marion Biotech to completely halt drug production at the Noida plant after Uzbekistan linked the deaths of 18 children in that country to drinking tainted health syrup produced by Marion Biotech.
At midnight, once the inspection was over, the state drug controller of Uttar Pradesh issued an order to stop all drug manufacturing at the facility.
“We await the reports, factory was inspected. We’ve halted the production of all medicines. It needs to be found why cases came from a single hospital there. Our products go to other countries as well,” said Marion Biotech Pharma Company legal head Hasan Harris.

At Marion’s plant, there was a violation of schedule M of Good Manufacturing Practice (GMP), a mechanism for guaranteeing that goods are consistently produced and controlled in accordance with quality standards.
“There is no problem from our end and no issue in testing. We have been there for the past ten years. Once the government report will come, we will look into it. For now the manufacturing has stopped,” Harris added.
Earlier, a Joint inspection of the Noida facility of Marion Biotech, was carried out by UP Drug Control and the CDSCO team.
Similar to what was done after 70 children were killed in The Gambia earlier this year, the samples have been sent for contamination testing.
