New Delhi, May 4: The Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) is watching the situation linked to communal tension in Rajasthan’s Jodhpur very closely, said MHA officials on Wednesday.

Notably, on Tuesday hours before Eid, tensions erupted in Rajasthan Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot’s hometown of Jodhpur, causing officials to ban mobile internet connections and impose a curfew in 10 police station regions of the city.

There was a ruckus over the placement of religious flags atop the Jalori entrance circle in Jodhpur, which resulted in stone-pelting and the injury of five police officers. People have been urged to maintain peace and unity, according to the state Chief Minister.

Following the incident, the Jodhpur Police Department issued orders enforcing a curfew till midnight on May 4 and suspending mobile internet access to prevent misinformation from spreading.

The situation was brought under control early Tuesday with the deployment of a large number of police officers, but tensions rose again the next morning following Eid prayers at an Eidgah. Near the Jalori gate area, shops, automobiles, and homes were assaulted with stones.

Minority community members were putting up Eid flags, including one on a roundabout next to the statue of independence warrior Balmukund Bissa. Members of the other community said that a saffron flag, which they had placed there ahead of Parshuram Jayanti, had gone missing, resulting in a clash.

Officials reported the situation escalated into stone-pelting and fighting. The police raced to the scene to handle the situation, which resulted in the injuries of five officers, according to the police.
