New Delhi, July 16: West Bengal Governor Jagdeep Dhankhar’s name was announced as the BJP led-National Democratic Alliance’s (NDA) vice presidential candidate on Saturday.
JP Nadda, the head of the BJP, made the declaration at the party’s parliamentary board meeting in Delhi. The panel included Prime Minister Narendra Modi, BJP President JP Nadda, Union Ministers Amit Shah, Nitin Gadkari, and Rajnath Singh, among others.
Dhankhar, who is currently the governor of West Bengal, has frequently been in limelight for his disagreements with Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on matters ranging from state universities to political unrest.
Nadda said that Dhankhar had become the “people’s governor” as he is a “kisan putra” (farmer’s son).
After being chosen as the representative for Jhunjhunu in the 1989 Lok Sabha elections, over three decades have passed since Jagdeep Dhankhar first entered the public eye.
Later, in 1990, he also held the position of Minister of State for Parliamentary Affairs. He won a seat in the Rajasthan assembly in 1993 from the Kishangarh district of Ajmer.
He was named governor of West Bengal in July 2019, where he has worked hard and built a name for himself as a People’s Governor by bringing attention to concerns of public welfare.
On August 10, when M. Venkaiah Naidu’s term as vice president expires, the position of Vice President will become vacant.
The deadline for filing nominations was July 19, and elections for vice president are set for August 6.
