Kolkata, Jan 15: In the wake of mounting COVID-19 instances, the West Bengal Election Commission on Saturday postponed elections in four municipal corporations for three weeks, to February 12.
Polls for Siliguri Municipal Corporation, Chandernagore Municipal Corporation, Bidhannagar Municipal Corporation, and Asansol Municipal Corporation will now be held on February 12 instead of January 22, according to a notification issued by the SEC. The polls will be open from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m., according to the announcement.
The Polling will be held from 7 am to 5 pm, as per the election commission.
Due to the current pandemic crisis, the state administration wrote a letter to the SEC earlier in the day consenting to reschedule the election dates. In light of the increase in cases, the Calcutta High Court had also urged the commission to look into the potential of delaying the civic polls by four to six weeks.
