Women’s rights activist Kamla Bhasin passes away

Kamla  Bhasin, a very familiar name in women’s rights and peace, passed away on Saturday. The 75-year-old author, Poet and Women’s rights activist was suffering from Cancer and pulmonary edema and was admitted to a hospital on Friday.

  “Fiesty Kamla Bhasin has fought her last battle, singing and celebrating a life well-lived. Her absence will be felt acutely, her gutsy presence, laughter and song, her wonderful strength and her legacy. We treasure her now as we did before,” Actor Shabana Azmi tweeted.

Notably, Bhasin was working as a women’s rights activist since 1970, focusing on gender, human development and education. She was a prominent voice in India and South Asian countries for Women’s rights. She has also written several books on feminism which was later on translated into more than 30 languages.

Human rights activist Kavita Srivastava broke the news of her demise on Twitter. She tweeted “Kamla Bhasin , our dear friend, passed away around 3 am today, September 25. This is a big setback for the women’s movement in India and the South Asian region. Kamla, you will always live in our hearts.”
