Youth World Boxing Championships: Vishwanath, 8 more boxers advance into quarters

New Delhi, Nov 20: On the fifth day of the Youth Men and Women’s World Boxing Championships in La Nucia, Spain, eight Indian boxers made it to the quarterfinals, including the defending Asian youth champions Vishwanath Suresh and Vanshaj.

Vishwanath (48 kg) faced Italian boxer Attrativo Salvatore, and the Chennai fighter put on a clinical display, displaying his deft footwork and quickness to easily win the pre-quarterfinal match 5-0. Vanshaj (63.5kg), a Sonipat native, showed off his strength and technical dominance to defeat Kakulov Enrique of Spain 5-0 and advance to the quarterfinals.

The last three male boxers, Jadumani Singh (51 kg), Ashish (54 kg), and Deepak (75 kg), all won their matches by unanimous decision and advanced to the round of eight.

While Deepak overcame Leiva Antonio of Argentina, Jadumani and Ashish triumphed over Spain’s Jimenez Asier and Pamisa Eijay of the Philippines, respectively.

In the women’s division, Bhawna Sharma (48 kg) and Asian youth champion Tamanna (50 kg) each received a RSC decision victory over Finland’s Pia Jarvinen and Poland’s Oliwia Zuzanna to advance to the quarterfinals.

Griviya Devi defeated Romania’s Ana Maria Romantov in the 54 kg pre-quarterfinal match to earn a 5-0 victory.

The only Indian wrestler to lose was Aman Rathore (67kg), who fell to Yousif Hussein of Iraq by a score of 2-3.

On the sixth day of the competition, the final 16 round will feature five Indians, including two men. The women’s division will include matches between Mahak Sharma (66 kg), Preeti Dahiya (57 kg), and Devika Ghorpade (52 kg).

In the men’s division, Sahil Chauhan (71 kg) and Bharat Joon (92 kg) will square off.
