Ranchi: About 1300 people die of cancer every day in India therefore timely and effective steps must be initiated for its prevention, management and cure. According to ICMR data, 14.61 lakh people were diagnosed with Cancer in 2022 out of which nearly one third died. One out of every nine suffers from some kind of cancer during his/ her lifetime.

Dr Madan Mohan Pandey, Medical Director of Kanke-based Tata Trust’s supported Ranchi Cancer Hospital & Research Centre outlined these facts while delivering a lecture on cancer awareness at Birsa Agricultural University on Friday. Late detection, the concentration of super speciality hospitals in big cities, lack of doctors, nurses and infrastructure facilities, out-of-pocket expenses, unhealthy lifestyles like the use of tobacco, liquor, fibreless diet, pollution, obesity, inactivity are the main reasons for increasing incidence of this deadly disease. Those having a family history of cancer are 10-15 percent more likely to be inflicted by this disease.

Dr Pandey said Tata supported Super Speciality Cancer Hospital working in Sukurhuttu, Kanke for the last one year is as good as any big corporate hospital based in metro cities. Patients are treated here at CGHS rate.  Treatment is completely free for those having an Ayushman Bharat card. Nearly 20000 tests, 300 surgeries, 4,000 radiotherapies and 1100 chemotherapies have been conducted here till the last month year.  Under the ‘Know your health’ package, several tests including some kind of cancer screening are conducted at Rs 1000 only for those under 30 while Rs 1500 is charged for those over 30 years of age. CT Scan, MRI, Mammography, and pathological tests recommended by other hospitals are also conducted here at a lower cost because earning profit is not the motto of Tata Trusts, Dr Pandey added.

Dr Rajnigandha Tudu, medical oncologist of the hospital detailed the reasons, symptoms, warning signals, different stages of the disease and treatment and preventive measures. Mukul Kr Ghosh and Priyadarshini of hospital management also spoke on this occasion. Dr BK Agrawal, BAU Director Students Welfare proposed a vote of thanks. BAU Registrar Dr MS Malik said that a cancer awareness programme for students will be organised in the next phase.
