New Delhi, Aug 30: The Supreme Court on Tuesday disposed of ten petitions, including the ones filed by the National Human Rights Commission, seeking proper investigation in the cases of 2002 Gujarat riots.
A panel led by Chief Justice of India UU Lalit noted on Tuesday that there is just one trial ongoing in the Naroda Gam matter. It requested the Special Investigation Team (SIT) take action to resolve the case.
“This court had appointed an SIT for nine major trials in the Gujarat riots. In all cases, except one, trials have been concluded and appeals are pending in high courts or the Supreme Court,” Mukul Rohatgi, a senior attorney, informed the bench.
“Only in 1 out of the 9 Naroda Gam case, the trial is at final argument stage,” he said.
The bench was made aware of a number of transfer petitions that were submitted between 2008 and 2010 but are now infructuous.
Concerning activist Teesta Setalvad’s bail request, the Supreme Court ruled that her request can be taken into consideration by the proper party. Today, a different Supreme Court court is hearing Teesta Setalvad’s separate case.
Teesta Setalvad was detained in June of this year on suspicion of falsifying evidence to put “innocent individuals” in the crosshairs of investigations related to the Godhra riots.
