499 boys’ and 229 girls’ schools in Jharkhand lack washrooms; 672 miss drinking water facility

Ranchi, May 25: As per a recent notification, the Jharkhand Education Project Council (JEPC) has given guidelines to districts to construct and repair washrooms in girls’ and boys’ schools. Notably, this decision was taken after a report declared that around 499 boys’ schools and 229 girls’ schools in the state do not have washrooms on the premises.

Project Director Kiran Kumar Pasi, in this regard, said, “Funds will be allocated to the schools. At the same time, schools where toilets were constructed in the past, but are not functional at present, have been asked to repair the toilets.”

She further added that the  Dumka district has the maximum number of schools; 91 to be exact, that do not have toilets. Of these, 61 schools do not have toilets for boys and 30 for girls. At the same time, 44 schools in Palamu, 41 in Hazaribagh and 38 in Chatra do not have toilets.

Along with no washrooms, schools in the state also have issues with drinking water facilities. Around 672 schools in the state do not have drinking water provided. According to a report prepared by the JEPC, around 130 schools in West Singhbhum do not have drinking water facilities. At the same time, 105 schools in Sahebganj, 92 in Godda, 81 in Dumka, 34 in Hazaribagh, 31 in Bokaro, 29 in Deoghar, 28 in Giridih, 20 in Latehar, 18 in Khunti and 16 in Dhanbad do not have drinking water facilities. The process of setting up drinking water systems has been started in these schools. However, 100 percent of schools in Seraikela-Kharsawan district have drinking water facilities, states the report.
