Ranchi, May 24: Jharkhand Governor Ramesh Bais has expressed concerns over the near to 67 percent vacancies in the universities in the state. He said this on being informed that out of the total 4566 posts in the universities, around 3064 posts remain vacant at the moment.

Bais further expressed concern over the status of higher education in the state and instructed the Jharkhand Public Service Commission (JPSC) chairman Amitabh Choudhary to carry out necessary processes for recruitment.

Notably, at a review meeting held with the officials of the nine universities in the state, the governor enquired about the number of posts vacant in respective universities along with the total number of posts available.

Officials of the Ranchi University (RU) informed the governor that out of the 1032 posts in the university, 674 are vacant at the moment. Similarly, Dr Shyama Prasad Mukherjee University (DSPMU) has 166 seats, out of which, 111 are vacant. The officials of the Kolhan University informed that out of total 994 seats, 719 posts are empty.

Women’s University said it has 30 seats of the 60 seats vacant, while Vinoba Bhave University has 343 seats out of 597 vacant. Meanwhile, Koylanchal has 414 posts out of 651 empty. NPU Medininagar officials said they have 279 out of 383 posts vacant, while SKMU Dumka officials informed the governor that out of 683 posts available in the university, 494 remain vacant.

The governor also said that the Raj Bhavan will now appoint in-charge principals in the affiliated colleges. Along with this, he added that appointment of principals and teachers in affiliated colleges will also be done by the JPSC under the Jharkhand University Act.

Meanwhile, the officials of the Higher Education Department informed the governor of the new posts being created for Vinoba Bhave and DSPMU. The officials said, “A total of 70 posts of teachers including 40 assistant professors, 20 associate professors and 10 professors are to be created in 19 PG departments, while, 40 posts of teachers including 20 associate professors and 20 professors will be created in Vinoba Bhave and DSPMU respectively.”

Along with this, the Governor has expressed displeasure over the incomplete process of making posts and statuses of professor, non teaching staff and even the vice chancellor in the Jharkhand Technical University (JUT).

He remarked that the process of making statutes had begun in 2017, but is still to come to its conclusion. Claiming that it is a serious issue, the governor then said that in case of appointment of professors in universities, the university itself should be considered a unit instead of the respective departments. This means that from now, in case of department wise vacancies in different universities, university-wise vacancies will be taken out.
