Jamshedpur, June 1: Cancer patients in Jamshedpur can now look forward to free home palliative care service.
Suri Seva Foundation in association with CanSupport today launched Pritpal CanSupport Home Palliative Care Service in Jamshedpur.
Palliative care is a specialized medical care for people living with a serious illness, such as cancer. Patients in palliative care may receive medical care for their symptoms, or palliative care, along with treatment intended to cure their serious illness.
“This is a first of its kind free of charge service in Jamshedpur that is going to make available medical, nursing, and psychosocial support to those battling cancer and their caregivers in their homes, ” said Kulvin Suri, a member of the foundation.
Kulvin Suri’s uncle Harcharan S Suri is the president of the Suri Seva Foundation. Vice-president (Corporate Services ) Tata Steel, Chanakya Chaudhary was the chief guest at the launch function organised at the Russi Mody Centre for Excellence here this afternoon.
He welcomed the new initiative for cancer patients and extended his support for the cause.
CEO of CanSupport Dr Ambika Rajvanshi who completed 15 years in the organisation was also present at the launch function along with other guests.
Cancer is a disease that is on the rise in our country, and it causes tremendous physical, and emotional suffering not only to the patient but also to their caregivers.
Palliative care is provided by a specially trained team of doctors, nurses and other specialists who work together with a patient’s other doctors to provide an extra layer of support. It is appropriate at any age and any stage in a serious illness, and it can be provided along with curative treatment.
The goal of Pritpal CanSupport Palliative Home Care Services is to become an instrument of peace experienced by cancer patients and their family members in Jamshedpur and surrounding areas.
CanSupport (www.cansupport.org) provides free of charge home-based palliative care to cancer patients in North India.
Its 28 home care teams comprising a doctor, nurse and counsellor visit cancer patients in their homes to give them medical, emotional and psychosocial support. They also supply nursing and medical equipment to those who can’t afford it.
At any given point, the home care teams are taking care of about 3000 cancer patients concurrently.
The organisation aims to provide compassionate, holistic care to those who are battling cancer and their caregivers.
Apart from its home care service, CanSupport runs a free telephone helpline, Day Care for cancer patients, and three outpatient clinics including one mobile one.
Suri Seva Foundation (SSF) is a non-profit corporation organized under the laws of the State of Michigan, USA. It was organized exclusively to receive and administer funds for charitable, educational and scientific purposes, including making grants to fund charitable projects.
In 2019, SSF funded the establishment of the Palliative Care Centre at Meherbai Tata Memorial Hospital, Jamshedpur, through a collaboration Agreement with Sir Dorabji Tata Trust, Mumbai.
