Ranchi, July 25: A fourth grade staff of prestigious Birla Institute of Technology (BIT) abducted a retired professor of his institute to extort money from him.

Dy SP (Sadar) Prabhat Ranjan Barwar informed this after S.P (city) Anshuman Kumar produced the staff along with two others involved in the abduction that was reported on July 25 at the Mesra OP under Sadar Police station area of the Jharkhand capital.

“The professor (Supriyio Kumar Das) was unmarried. He was very close to Shanker Mahto, a fourth grade student. After his retirement in 2018, the fourth grade staff planned to extort money from the professor which the latter had received after his retirement. In order to do so the staff hatched a conspiracy and abducted the professor. However, we foiled his plan,” Barwar said.

The police rescued the professor from an asbestos roof house in a forest in Rajadera Ulatu under Angara police station. The professor was actually abducted on July 19 from a hotel where Mahto had taken the former from his rented house at Neemtand Kedal for lunch.

Apart from BIT staff, Mahto, two others arrested in this connection include Bhola Kumar, a resident of Nalanda in Bihar and Anil Kumar Mishra, a resident of Neori. They were deputed as guards in the asbestos roof house. Police took help from its technical team to ensure the safe return of the professor.

Police recovered the vehicles and mobile phones used in the crime.
