Ranchi, Sept.9: The police in the city are yet to arrest any of the five youths who on Thursday assaulted a science professor in the Doranda college campus after the latter restrained them from roaming in the college campus without any purpose.

A college insider informed that the delay in police action expresses concern over the seriousness of the police in providing proper security to educational institutions at a time when cases of attack on college and school going girls are coming from different parts of the state and the government is having a tough time facing the criticism of the opposition inside and outside the assembly.

“There were as many as five youths who assaulted the professor. Out of five two were identified and named in the FIR but despite this, the police are going slow in taking action,” this insider said.

Officer-in-charge of Doranda police station, Ramesh Kumar, admitted the delay saying ‘prayas jari hai (efforts are on)’.

Meanwhile, the condition of the attack victim, Mati-Ur-Rahman, is reported to be out of danger.

College principal, B.P. Verma informed about the condition of Rahman saying he had a talk with the latter in the morning.  “The college is closed due to Anant Chaturdashi. However, I had a talk with Rahman Sir in the morning. He said he is alright,” Verma said.

Verma while informing about the welfare of the victim professor shared the security problem in the college campus saying the police support provided so far is perfunctory at best as it has not become helpful so far to deter the morale of eve teasers who keep on marauding in the college campus.

“Youths from outside threaten private security guards deputed by us of dire consequences in case the latter restrain the former from entering the college campus.  From the police department, a lady constable has been deputed in the college campus to keep vigil on the eve teasers but she does not feel confident enough to handle youths from outside. Apart from this, she is also irregular,” Verma said.

Asked about Shakti commandos, which were introduced by the district police in January 2017 to keep vigil on the college campus after a B.Tech student was raped and murdered , Principal Verma said he had never seen such commandos since he joined the college as principal two years ago.

Verma said there are as many as 3000 regular students, including more than 50 percent girls in the college and such incidents create a sense of fear in the mind of students, parents and teachers and thus pollute the academic atmosphere.

An insider said apart from policing, the electronic surveillance system is also poor in the college. On which, Principal Verma said proper steps have been taken for the same and very soon the college will have a proper electronic surveillance system.
