New Delhi, Jan 10: The Supreme Court of India on Tuesday declined to give an urgent hearing in the plea that asked for the Court’s involvement against the sinking of land in the hill town of Joshimath, Uttarakhand.

In a democratic nation, anything that is urgent does not need to be brought before the court because democratically elected institutions are already in place to look into it, according to a bench consisting of Chief Justice of India (CJI) DY Chandrachud and Justice PS Narasimha.

“In a democratic country everything of urgency does not have to come to the court. There are democratically elected institutions to look into it,” the CJI remarked.

As a result, the Court scheduled the case for hearing on January 16.

In his petition, Swami Avimukteshwaranand Saraswati asked the court to intervene in order to guarantee the citizens of Joshimath immediate financial aid and compensation.

The plea was mentioned on Monday too before CJI Chandrachud, who had asked the lawyer to mention the matter on Tuesday.

“This is an important matter related to Joshimath sinking,” the lawyer had submitted.

“Mention it tomorrow when you are in the mentioning list,” the CJI had said.

Joshimathi, which has a population of about 17,000, is situated 1,800 metres above sea level in Uttarakhand’s Chamoli district. Joshimath has been deemed disaster-prone when cracks began to show up in the city’s structures and roads. Many people were evacuated after that.
