Islamabad: Amid growing unrest in Pakistan, with the situation in Balochistan and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa worsening and fears rising over the country’s potential fragmentation, prominent religious and political leader Maulana Fazlur Rehman has launched a sharp attack on Army Chief Asim Munir, drawing a pointed comparison to 1971.
Rehman Warns Against Repeating History
Expressing concern over Pakistan’s current situation, Rehman said that while the army and its leadership hold power, history cannot be forgotten, referencing December 1971, when Pakistan’s forces surrendered to India. He recalled that just a day before the surrender, General Yahya Khan had assured the Pakistani public that the army would fight street by street, and across fields and mountains, yet the very next day, Pakistan’s military laid down its arms before India.
Rehman Highlights War-Like Conditions in Balochistan, KP
Raising concerns over the situation in Balochistan and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Rehman said the regions were experiencing war-like conditions, with continuous bloodshed on the streets. Referring to the prolonged protests in PoK’s Rawalakot, he noted that people there had been protesting for nearly three months, and questioned why dialogue had not been initiated with them.
Rehman Questions Munir’s Intentions, Warns of Geographic Shifts
Rehman directly questioned Asim Munir’s objectives, warning that when bloodshed continues in a region for an extended period, it can signal potential geographic changes in the future. Referring to the ongoing conflict in Afghanistan since 1979, the Maulana urged Pakistan’s rulers to clearly communicate their intentions to the public.
