New Delhi, Jan 29: Prime Minister Narendra Modi addressed the first ‘Mann Ki Baat’ of the year 2023 on Sunday. In the 97th edition of the PM’s monthly radio programme, he said that a sizeable number of Padma awardees come from tribal communities and people associated with tribal society.

PM Modi said many great personalities who worked on tribal languages like Toto, Ho, Kui, Kuvi and Manda have received Padma Awards and that it is a matter of pride for all of us. People working with Siddi, Jarwa and Onge tribes have also been awarded this time.

“Tribal life is different from city life, it also has its own challenges. Despite all this, tribal societies are always eager to preserve their traditions,” he added.

This time among Padma awardees are those people who have expertise in spreading melody of our traditional musical instruments like Santoor, Bamhum, Dwitara. “This year the echoes of the Padma awards are being heard even in those areas which used to be Naxalite affected. Those who show the right path to the misguided youths in the Naxalite affected areas by their efforts have been honored with the Padma awards,” he further added.

PM Modi applauded the work of Odisha’s milletpreneurs, a women’s self-help group of the tribal district Sundargarh who make biscuits, cakes and other eatables from millets. He also spoke about the importance of ‘millets’ and said 2023 will be the ‘International Year for Millets’.
