Ranchi, January 31:  Hindalco Industries Limited on Monday began its Remove Plastic: Save World initiative’ as a part of action against the threat of plastic pollution to the environment. Under the initiative, Hindalco is making people aware of the harms of using single-use plastic and helping them with a solution by distributing jute bags among people in the villages.

Notably, Hindalco is working seriously to build awareness about the importance of environmental protection within the community. In the first phase, free jute bags were distributed among people in the Lohardaga Mines area of Hindalco’s Bauxite Mines Division. Maina Bagicha, Shukra Bazar (Patra Toli), Gumla, Kisco, Budh Bazar near Jamuntoli village in Lohardaga Mines area, Tutua Morh in Netarhat and also in the weekly market in Sherngdag and Gurdari villages.

The number of bags distributed in the first phase is 1000 per location. After the success of the initiative in the first phase, Hindalco’s Environment, CSR and HR team is also planning to start Phase 2 at the earliest. Sustained efforts are being made to make people more and more aware of the harm caused by single-use plastic so that they are motivated to give it up completely.

Bijesh Jha, Head of Hindalco Bauxite Division, said, “Through Hindalco’s Plastic Hatao Duniya Bachao initiative, we are trying to urge people to adopt practices that are healthier for the environment. That’s why we are distributing these jute bags free of cost among people in the villages. We will continue these efforts.”

These efforts are being taken after the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change (MoEFCC) issued a guideline on single-use plastic ban under the Plastic Waste Management (Amendment) Rules, 2022 in February. As per the new guidelines, the use of single-use plastic will be banned.  Along with this, plastic packaging waste is now to be collected and managed. This amendment came into effect on July 1, 2022.

As per information, Hindalco has done several such important works in its mines area for environmental protection. Bio-park and one-of-a-kind bamboo pavilion have already been constructed at Bagdu Mines. Officials have claimed that Bio-park has been constructed in the Bagdu mine to keep the environment balanced. Also, the entire red mud generated during alumina extraction is being used for sustainable development in cement industries to balance and reduce environmental hazards under the concept of Waste to Wealth.
