Indonesia: EAM Jaishankar meets counterparts from ASEAN

Jakarta, July 13: With his counterparts from the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) on Thursday, External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar had fruitful conversations about the development of cooperation in areas including fintech, food security and maritime domains.

Jaishankar is in the capital of Indonesia to take part in an ASEAN-India Foreign Ministers meeting.

He also met Singapore’s Vivian Balakrishnan, an Indian-origin foreign minister and discussed the development of the comprehensive strategic alliance.

Discussed greater focus on digital, fintech, food security and maritime domains. Exchanged views on the situation in Myanmar,” Jaishankar tweeted.

Additionally, Jaishankar met with his Bruneian counterpart.

“Good meeting with Brunei FM Dato Erywan Pehin Yusof on the sidelines of the ASEAN-India Ministerial. Our bilateral cooperation grows steadily. Focused on enhancing trade. Discussed food security, mobility and space cooperation,” Jaishankar tweeted along with pictures.

Brunei, Cambodia, Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, Myanmar, Philippines, Singapore, Thailand and Vietnam are the ASEAN’s member countries.

He met with his counterparts from a number of nations on Wednesday, including Indonesia, Malaysia, Australia, and Vietnam.

The Secretary General of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN), Dr Kao Kim Hourn, was the first engagement for the Minister of External Affairs here in the Indonesian capital.

Jaishankar will interact with his counterparts in Indonesia during his visit in the format ASEAN-India, East Asia Summit and ASEAN Regional Forum.

Jaishankar will depart from Jakarta and arrive in Bangkok on Sunday to take part in the 12th Foreign Ministers’ Meeting of the Mekong Ganga Cooperation (MGC) Mechanism.

The Ganga and Mekong River basins are shared by six of the MGC’s members: India, Cambodia, Lao PDR, Myanmar, Thailand and Vietnam. The MGC aims to promote stronger ties between these nations.

Jaishankar will also be present in Bangkok on July 17 for the BIMSTEC Foreign Ministers’ Retreat.

The Bay of Bengal region’s countries are brought together for extensive collaboration through the economic and technical effort known as BIMSTEC. The retreat’s topics would include how to strengthen the organisation and progress toward the BIMSTEC goal.
